JAMES SCORES 18 SECOND HALF POINTS TO LIFT HAMPTON TO A 73-67 WIN OVER BETHUNE-COOKMAN

Hampton, Va. – After being away from home since November 25, 2007, the Lady Pirates were back in the Hampton University Convocation Center and they were ready to play. Hampton hosted the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University in MEAC action and senior guard Stephanie James scored a game high 21 points to lead Hampton to a 73-67victory.
With the victory, the Lady Pirates increased their season record to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Although Hampton secured the victory, it didn’t get off to a roaring start. In fact, the Lady Wildcats led 36-24 at one stage in the first half as they shot 40 percent from the field, hitting 15 of 37 of their shots from the field.. Hampton, meanwhile, hit only 24 percent of their first half shots, connecting on just seven of 29 field goal tries.
Hampton came out in the second half ready to play. The senior team work of James and Artavia Burns quickly helped the Lady Pirates pull within five of the Lady Cats with a pair of big 3-pointers from each of them. Four made free throws by senor Rachel Butler would help the Lady Pirates pull within one with 10:30 left in the second half. It was tied up at 50 with 10:00 minutes left in the game after Burns hit one of two at the charity stripe. At one point, it seemed as if senior night had come early for the Lady Pirates.
Despite shooting 30 percent (21-of-69) on the night, Hampton was able to battle back from a slow start and come out on top of the Lady Cats. Hampton scored 38 points off the bench, 22 in the paint and 27 off 25 BCU turnovers to take their second conference victory.
James and her seven three-pointers led both teams in scoring with 21 points. Burns and Butler followed with 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lady Pirates.
Bethune-Cookman was led by Keturah Newkirk, who scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
